New Holland Fodder Care

AFIA's quality procedure and marketing program Fodder Care, in partnership with New Holland, has recently been revamped for a more user friendly and robust program.

This system takes a market approach as AFIA recognises that not all buyers of fodder require the same quality assurance for their product.Fodder Care is about accrediting the commodity on a lot by lot basis, not a person or businesses, giveing strength to the credibility of the program.

The program now consists of the following five voluntary modules:

  1. Paddock inspection records – inspection for hazards such as wire or animal carcasses
  2. Chemical application records – as managed through the ChemCheck system applied to export hay
  3. Harvest records – detailing raking, conditioning and baling, weather, curing time, moisture records,  applications of any additives and storage location
  4. Sampling and analysis – ie hay that has been sampled according to the AFIA protocol and analysed for nutritional parameters
  5. Traceability and inspection – bales individually tagged or independently inspected

Different levels of accreditation will be more suited to some clients than others. Both export and domestic hay buyers are increasingly demanding accurate chemical application records and reliable traceability mechanisms. This ensures the hay they are purchasing meets the demands of export customers and milk company requirements.

The Fodder Care logo will be used to identify fodder that is accredited on a vendor delivery declaration issued by the seller to the buyer, as proof of compliance to their milk company's quality assurance program. The Fodder Care logo will also be used on AFIA website listings to identify those compliant lots of hay.

Contractors also are set to benefit with the utilisation of standard written agreements which puts in writing the details of the task to be performed. While certainly not mandatory the written agreements provide both parties, the contractor and the client, a clear and unquestionable job outline. Variation forms are available for use when unexpected circumstances change the nature of the agreement, eg baling hay at a higher moisture level or adding additional operations such as super conditioning Both the Agreement and Variation forms come as self carbonised forms and are to be signed by the contractor and the client.

AFIA is running New Holland Fodder Care workshops on demand through simple free call teleconference training. If you would like to find out when the next training session is please contact Nick McClelland at the AFIA office.
